7 Tips You Need to Know for an Amazing and Flawless First Dance

1. Pick a song that you both love and enjoy.

Your choice of song will determine the style and set the pace of the dance. Choose a song that reflects your character and your personality.

The first dance should not be a monotonous routine solely prepared to tick a box out of your wedding checklist. Rather, it should be a means to express your love to one another and a way to convey your sincere love and affection to your significant other.

In determining your song of choice for your wedding, you should not be bound by the generic pop versions of your favourite songs, but you should also explore other possibilities such as acoustic versions, slower versions and genre-adapted versions.

Free online tools such as YouTube are your best friends in finding your perfect song… use them wisely.

At the Wedding Dance Malta studio our first job is to make sure that you select your perfect song for your wedding!

2. Time is of the essence – Keep it short and sweet.

Did you ever watch those awkward first dance clips where the couple do the same awkward move for a whole five minutes? Well, we did.

There are two parts to this point: Short and Sweet.

Short – Your dance should not be stretched for more than 5 minutes. Long dances tend to be boring and unless you have something up your sleeve that will keep your audience in awe, we suggest that your dance should last for about 2 to 4 minutes.

So, the next time you think about the length of your first dance, just imagine the audience losing interest in you and your partner after just 5 minutes…Yikes!

Sweet – Your first dance should be more than just facing each other, hand in hand and moving awkwardly from one side to another for the whole length of the song. Rather, your first dance should be based on a well-thought routine incorporating your passion for your other half whilst putting on an amazing show.

The routine is more often than not quite difficult to devise without the help of expert wedding dance tutors. That’s why our dedicated Wedding Dance Malta dance teachers are here to help!

3. Make sure that your outfit and shoes do not limit your first-dance routine.

What does mastering your first dance matter if you are limited by your outfit on your big day? Most couples do think of this point and even go the extra mile and prepare a dedicated outfit for their dance, however, most love birds out there just dance in what they plan to spend the rest of the night with.

If this is your case, you should think properly of the different ways your outfit can impact your dance routine on your big day and plan your dance accordingly

4. Master the basics first, add the flair later!

Practice makes perfect. Let’s call a spade a spade and not assume that you’re dance floor ready just yet. Too not be the victim of that awkward first dance moment you might probably need at least a few lessons just to get you up and running with the basics.

During the course of your wedding lessons you should not go for broke and attempt to learn the most complicated routine there is to know. With risk comes reward, but there also comes the possibility of losing.

Therefore, at Wedding Dance Malta we strive to teach you a solid foundation of the basics and ensure that you’ve got a tight grip with the basic elements of your wedding dance routine before adding the complicated bits.

So, for those of you asking how many lessons you will need to be able to perform a jaw-dropping first dance, it will all depend on your initial technique, your ability to learn quick and your commitment.

5. Enjoy it

We understand that your wedding day is one of the most exciting days you will ever experience. The first dance should not add to your pressure and stress, but should alleviate it.

You should not worry about forgetting your routine since this will only add to your worries. Just go out there and enjoy it. Remember, that the first dance is not a show of moves, but an expression of your love towards each other.
